Karlsruhe, March 01, 2024 The Federal Institute of Hydraulic Engineering (BAW) and the Technical University (TU) of Darmstadt today agreed on the joint appointment of an assistant professorship for geotechnics. The head of the BAW, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Christoph Heinzelmann, and the President of TU Darmstadt, Prof. Dr. Tanja Brühl, have signed a cooperation agreement to this end.

“As a departmental research institution, the BAW stands for long-term, high-quality consulting services for hydraulic engineering on federal waterways. Our research services are an important basis for this. The German Council of Science and Humanities recently rated these services as very good to excellent. We can only maintain this high level in the long term if we continue to develop our scientific profile. The joint appointment of an assistant professorship together with TU Darmstadt is an important step in this direction,” says Heinzelmann.

Dr. Jan Kayser, Research Officer at BAW and Head of the Department of Geotechnics, adds: “BAW is breaking new ground with the first joint appointment of a professorship. The professorship will help us to further sharpen our research profile. The Department of Geotechnics at BAW and the Institute of Geotechnics at TU Darmstadt complement each other perfectly. Together, we will develop outstanding engineering solutions and apply them directly to projects on the waterways.”

The professorship will deal in depth with the geotechnical modeling of hydraulic engineering infrastructure, a pressing issue in view of the extensive need to renovate waterways. The cooperation will initially run for five years, with both parties aiming to make the jointly appointed professorship permanent.
