Darmstadt, February 12, 2025: The Technical University of Darmstadt has officially opened its new teaching laboratory building on the Lichtwiese campus. The modern new building offers optimal conditions for teaching and research in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. With its flexible room structure, the building is also designed to adapt to future requirements. At the same time, it meets high energy standards and contributes to the university's energy efficiency with sustainable technologies.

The compact, three-storey teaching laboratory building (LLG) offers space for chemical and physical research laboratories, student workrooms and a two-storey technical center. The special feature: The laboratory areas are divided by transparent partition walls. This offers a high degree of flexibility, as any future spatial adaptations can be carried out with manageable structural effort. An open communication zone on the first floor with seating promotes interdisciplinary exchange.

The combination of a clear architectural structure, targeted lighting and generous visual connections creates an open and inviting working atmosphere.

The building follows a sustainable energy concept and thus also takes account of the TU's sustainability goals. The façade is fitted with fixed solar shading elements that envelop the building and provide effective thermal insulation in summer. In addition, there is a maintenance walkway behind it, which allows maintenance and cleaning work to be carried out on the façade without the need for additional scaffolding or cherry pickers. The building envelope is insulated to a high standard and meets the requirements of the Building Energy Act and the standards of the state of Hesse. The retrofitting of the building with a photovoltaic system has already been technically prepared and is now expected to be implemented subsequently with funding from the state of Hesse. In addition, a ventilation system with a heat recovery rate of over 75 percent reduces energy requirements.

The reinforced concrete load-bearing structure was planned to create the greatest possible flexibility in the interior – with non-load-bearing interior walls to facilitate future redesigns. This means that the LLG is well positioned should research and teaching place new demands on the infrastructure in the future.

Professor Heribert Warzecha, TU Vice President for Studies, Teaching and Diversity, emphasized the importance of the new building:

“The new teaching laboratory building of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is a very successful example of a modern teaching-learning space, as the planning was entirely geared towards its future use. The students here experience what distinguishes teaching at TU Darmstadt and the department: it is practice-oriented and close to research.”

The new building was completed in a construction period of around three years. The total costs amount to around 26 million euros. With a usable area of around 2,200 square meters, the building offers generous facilities for scientific training and research.

Thanks to its modern, high-quality equipment and high safety standards, the LLG now offers our department significantly more opportunities for demanding laboratory work. The LLG is currently home to the laboratories of the following departments:
