A new generation of concrete ceilings is being developed at TU Darmstadt: topology-optimized, resource-efficient, and manufactured entirely using a 3D printer.

In the summer semester of 2025, researchers at Darmstadt Technical University developed a demonstrator that shows how solid construction and digital manufacturing can be newly interlinked. Under the direction of Prof. Stefan Schäfer and Nikola Bisevac from the Institute of Structural Design and Building Construction, a self-supporting concrete ceiling with a span of five meters was created, resting on a mushroom-shaped central support. The key lies in the formwork: the team prints it entirely additively, reproducing every rib, curve, and line of force as specified by the topology optimization.
