Press review: Avalanche research in Darmstadt

When you think of avalanches, you automatically think of the Alps, skiers, and mountain villages. It is mainly there and in other large mountain ranges around the world that suddenly detached snow slabs become a deadly danger. Year after year, people die under the weight of tons of snow.

Even though many years ago daredevils jumped off a ski jump on the Ludwigshöhe and a few centimeters of snow currently cover the city, probably no one in Darmstadt thinks about avalanches. No one, except for one person: Dr. Philipp Rosendahl founded Germany's only “Center for Snow and Avalanche Research” at the Technical University. Despite the lack of mountains and reliable snowfall, he says, “It fits perfectly with the Technical University and the city's scientific aspirations.”
