Press review: Cooperative professorship for geotechnical engineering in hydraulic infrastructure officially presented
2026/02/17
At a reception on February 11, 2026, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Machaček was officially introduced as the holder of the cooperative professorship “Geotechnics of Hydraulic Engineering Infrastructure.” The professorship is a joint institution of the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW) and the Technical University of Darmstadt and is located in the BAW's Geotechnics Department.
At the event, Prof. Machaček presented his areas of expertise and provided initial insights into his goals for future research cooperation between BAW and TU Darmstadt. The cooperative professorship is dedicated to geotechnical issues relating to the planning, construction, operation, and maintenance of hydraulic engineering infrastructure on federal waterways. The aim is to further strengthen the scientific basis for decisions in navigable waterway engineering.
“The close integration of university research and departmental research opens up great opportunities,” emphasized Prof. Machaček. “My goal is to work with the BAW to address practical issues in navigable waterway engineering on a scientific basis and to apply the knowledge gained in a targeted manner.”
The cooperative professorship acts as a link between university research and the BAW's departmental research.
In terms of content, the professorship focuses on key geotechnical issues in hydraulic engineering, including soil-structure interactions, geohydraulic processes in multiphase soil systems, special civil engineering, and sustainability aspects. A broad spectrum of experimental and numerical methods forms the basis for application-oriented research and targeted knowledge transfer.
Through its involvement in teaching at TU Darmstadt, the professorship promotes the training of qualified engineers for hydraulic engineering and thus supports the long-term securing of geotechnical expertise in the department.
