The department arose as one of the founding disciplines of the TH (Technische Hochschule) Darmstadt at the end of the 19th century. We have been shaping the engineering field at the TU Darmstadt and the progress of one of the most dynamic metropolitan regions in Europe in the areas of construction, environment and geodesy.
Our achievements in engineering research and teaching are the basis for our high national and international reputation.
We concentrate on engineering system solutions for the built-up environment in the system Earth, from the collection of scientific results to their application in engineering practice.
The union of research and teaching guarantees the success of the department and encourages life-long learning.
The symbiosis of science and engineering practice prepares our students for the best chances and jobs. Our concept includes the national and international networking of science, economics and administration.
Our particular focal points in teaching and research include basic engineering solutions for functional, safe, energy-efficient and resource-conserving shaping of the built-up environment. They deal with the planning, construction, operation, maintenance and dismantling of structures and systems. In particular, we place our scientific focus on the following points:

We stand for innovation and outstanding engineering solutions. We stand for the highest competence particularly in the forward-looking areas of planning, construction, operation, maintenance and dismantling of structures and systems, energy, mobility, resource efficiency as well as infrastructure. We provide society with top-quality scientific findings and engineering services.
We are aware of our responsibility to science and to education. It is the benchmark of our efforts. We live out our responsibility to society and our preparedness for change within the autonomous TU Darmstadt. In this way we create space for creativity and enthusiasm.
