research project : Real-time service life assessment of welded joints under variable thermocyclic loading based on real-time data

Renewable energies require frequent start-ups and shutdowns of power plants: With measured real-time data, the actual damage due to fatigue and thus a service life assessment can be determined for thermomechanically stressed components/welded joints..

Project name Real-time service life assessment of welded joints under variable thermocyclic loading based on real-time data
Project partner
Grantor BMWE/IGF – Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy / Industrial Collective Research
Duration from 1.5.2022 to 31.12.2025

Research field
E+E

(E+E > Energy + Environment
I+I > Information + Intelligence
M+M > Matter + Materials)
Project content In connection with the transformation of energy systems towards renewable energies, existing power plants need to be started up and shut down more frequently than originally planned, depending on the current energy level. The associated thermocyclic and thermomechanical stresses lead to damage accumulation, for example in welded joints of piping systems. A service life assessment based on measured real-time data enables conclusions to be drawn about the safe operation of power plants even under the new conditions.
