Project content Critical infrastructure safeguards the economy, quality of life and protection of communities. However, it is under pressure: ageing, climate risks and sustainability and resilience requirements call for new strategies and reliable solutions.
GEOLAB is an EU Horizon 2020 project that started in 2021 and brings together leading European institutions for physical modelling in the field of critical infrastructure, with a focus on geotechnical engineering. The infrastructure comprises 12 specialised facilities – including several geocentrifuges, a geomodel container, a liquefaction tank, a test pit, a large-scale triaxial test rig, a railway track simulator and field test sites – and is considered the most advanced geotechnical testing environment in Europe.
GEOLAB supported 44 transnational projects (including four at TU Darmstadt) and advanced new measurement and testing technologies. The central goal is to examine whether today's experimental and numerical tools are future-proof and, if necessary, to further develop methods and infrastructure. This has resulted in a cooperative community with an impact on sustainable development, digital transformation and scientific excellence.
