Process Management

Planning, execution and operation processes in civil and environmental engineering are characterized by increasing technical complexity, growing planning, environment and building code related requirements as well as by a high degree of cooperation between individual, professionally heterogenic participants at different locations and in separate organisations.

A successful cooperation with regards to planning, execution and operation, i.e. collaboration of multiple persons, groups or institutions in a team based on common data (e.g. geo information, geometry and material data, budgets and deadlines, building regulation boundary conditions) toward a common goal can only work if the communication and planning processes including precise interface definition are coordinated within a given project. Such coordination requires not only modelling of the participants’ processes in a suitable manner but also a fundamental understanding of the technical, economical, ecological and social context and of the requirements of the specific building task in question. With regards to current approaches, the digital method Building Information Modeling (BIM) needs to be mentioned. Due to the unique character of buildings it is necessary to research process models with which analyses and simulations can be conducted so that the consequences and individual decisions can be illustrated for the overall context in the sense of possible variants and alternatives of all participants. The research of methods and models for the management of ad hoc processes under consideration of the technical and institutional complexity of the task poses a special challenge, particularly due to the iterative and in part building accompanying character of engineering planning and quality assurance.
