TU honorary professor Hilligardt is the new district president

The TU honorary professor Jan Hilligardt took office today as the new district president in Darmstadt. The 53-year-old is now at the head of the largest administrative district in Hesse. Hilligardt is involved in teaching at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and supervises theses there.

After studying spatial and environmental planning at the University of Kaiserslautern, Hilligardt worked as a research assistant at the TU Darmstadt from 1997. He received his doctorate here in 2002 and his habilitation in 2005. In the same year, he was awarded the academic title of “Privatdozent”. In 2017, he was appointed honorary professor for “Urban and Regional Development / Spatial Planning” at TU Darmstadt.

From 2002 to 2008, Hilligardt worked for the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg as a consultant in the district administrator's office and, from 2006, also as head of the “Economy, Location Development, Citizen Services” department. In April 2008, he was elected Managing Director / Director of the Hessischer Landkreistag in Wiesbaden and was re-elected to this position in 2012 and 2018. The Social Democrat is a member of many committees, associations and institutions at federal and state level and has published numerous works, including on urban and regional development.

The administrative district of Darmstadt covers the southern part of Hesse. More than four million people live there, around two thirds of Hesse's population. The administrative district is one of the strongest economic regions in Germany and Europe.
