Dr.-Ing. Tobias Blach receives the Willi Hager Prize 2024
Kurt Ruth Prize 2025 goes to Dr. Leon Schumacher and Dr.-Ing. Steven R. Lorenzen
2025/06/23 by Prof. Markus Engelhart
Tobias Blach was awarded the prestigious Willi Hager Prize, endowed with 6,000 euros, for his dissertation entitled “Aerobic and Electrochemical Treatment of Process Water from Hydrothermal Carbonization of Sewage Sludge” at the 2025 Annual Conference of the Water Chemistry Society in Münster on 26.05.2025.

We are delighted that Tobias Blach, who completed his doctorate at the Department of Wastewater Technology at the IWAR Institute at TU Darmstadt, has been recognized. His research work represents an important contribution to the assessment of the influences on the composition of process water in the hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge and now makes it possible for the first time to better record essential factors for the degradability of the ingredients.

Willy Hager Prize
The Willy Hager Prize is awarded for outstanding work in the field of water or wastewater treatment.
The Willy Hager Prize is awarded annually to young scientists for outstanding work in the field of process engineering in (industrial) water or wastewater treatment. As a rule, the work should focus on solving process engineering problems. Typically, these are dissertations. However, joint theses by several scientists can also be submitted. The work should not date back more than three years and should have been carried out at a German university.
The Willy Hager Prize is endowed with a sum of € 6,000. This amount will be split equally between the prize winner and the university institute at which the work was carried out.
