As the highest-ranking university examination in the German-speaking world, the habilitation is the classic route to a professorship. It marks the end of the qualification phase for academia: those who successfully complete it have definitively proven that they have mastered their subject thematically, methodologically and pedagogically.

The habilitation regulations of TU Darmstadt (opens in new tab) (German Version) dated 29.06.2011 contain all the important regulations for the habilitation procedure.

In addition to the university-wide habilitation regulations, there are also so-called special regulations of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (opens in new tab)

Admission requires an outstanding doctorate with the rating “passed with distinction” or “passed very well”.

In order to submit an application for acceptance as a habilitation candidate to department 13, the prior approval of two members of the faculty's group of professors, who will advise the habilitation candidate on the habilitation procedure, is required.

The habilitation application or the application for admission to habilitation is only formally submitted once the written part has already been completed.

The application must be submitted in writing to the Dean, stating the subject for which the habilitation is sought.
