Project content Tunnels have been built for railroads for almost 200 years, some of which now have to be extensively renovated or replaced by new construction. Large quantities of resources, primarily concrete and steel, are used for this, which contribute a high proportion to the anthropogenic greenhouse gas potential. In a time of resource scarcity and climate change, the efficient use of resources is not only economically but also ecologically sensible in order to lead to a more sustainable construction industry. For this reason, this study realizes a sustainability analysis for railroad track construction, examining the extent to which building materials such as concrete and steel can be saved or replaced by ecological alternatives. To this end, measures for ecological construction in the field of solid construction are developed and transferred to tunnel construction. A database on greenhouse gas potentials and the costs of materials and processes is compiled in order to subsequently draw up cost and greenhouse gas balances for various realized tunnel construction methods. Finally, by identifying the most relevant approaches to CO2 reduction, an assessment of the CO2 savings potential of various tunnel construction projects can be made.
